What is Self-Esteem?

self-esteemThe dictionary defines self-esteem as confidence in one’s ability or worth. Self-respect, pride, dignity, confidence, morale are few other synonyms of self-esteem. It is how we perceive ourselves, how we see ourselves. It is how we value ourselves to the world. Self-esteem defines our confidence, our trust in ourselves. Self-esteem has two dimensions –

1. Positive self-esteem

Positive self-esteem is where you see yourself in high regard, you are confident about yourself and you know that you deserve respect from others. It gives you confidence and has a positive impact on your phycological and social behaviour. Self-esteem gives you the confidence to stand up for yourself and protect yourself when you feel that you are not being respected by others.

2. Low self-esteem

Low self-esteem is when you do not thing high about yourself. When you pity yourself or when you feel unworthy or non-deserving, this creates low self-esteem. It stops you from realising your own potential, your own worth and creates dis-respect for yourself. Low self-esteem is characterised by under confidence, inability to take risk and decision, blaming yourself for everything, fear of meeting in public, fear of being humiliated.

Possible reasons for low self-esteem –

There can be number of reasons for carrying a low self-esteem –

  1. Parental pressure – Parents, of course, are of utmost importance in our lives and we’d like to be in their good book. If parents do not appreciate us and criticize us or compare us with others, especially in front of others, then it has a very adverse impact on our self-esteem.
  2. Peer pressure – Friends and school mates have a great deal of impact on us. We always try to be a part of that group. If we are ridiculed by them or ignored by them, then it affects our self-esteem
  3. Physical appearance – Lack of confidence about our physical built or appearance can have an adverse effect on our self-esteem.
  4. Negative thoughts – Our thoughts define our lifestyle, it defines what we are. Negative thoughts about yourself can push down your self-esteem.
  5. Trauma – Emotional or physical abuse can traumatise self-image, respect and confidence. It takes a lot of time to come out of trauma and often leads to low self-esteem.

Self-esteem counselling will help you set the right goals for yourself and a path to attain those goals. It will encourage you to walk towards a better direction and feel positive about yourself. It will help you identify achievements starting with the small ones which you may have not even recognised. Counselling can help you understand your real worth and how to praise yourself.
